For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add melted butter, egg, salt, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead on a floured surface for 8 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Make the Topping:

  • In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and cream until smooth.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle walnut pieces over the topping.

Roll and Fill the Dough:

  • Roll the dough into a 12x16-inch rectangle. Spread softened butter evenly over the surface.
  • Mix brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, then sprinkle over the buttered dough. Add walnut pieces if desired.
  • Roll tightly from the long edge. Slice into 12 equal pieces.

Assemble and Bake:

  • Place rolls cut-side down onto the caramel topping. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Invert and Serve:

  • Cool for 5 minutes, then carefully invert the dish onto a serving platter. Spoon any extra caramel over the buns. Enjoy warm!
