Ingredients

  • 2 cups boiled water
  • 2 cups scalded milk
  • 1 tbsp package active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp shortening
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 3 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp flour

Instructions

  • Bring 2 cups of water and milk to a slow boil and immediately remove from burner
  • Add shortening sugar and salt
  • Let cool or add a few ice cubes to help cool until luke warm
  • Take ½ cup warm water and stir in ½ tsp sugar, then add yeast
  • Let sit until the yeast foams
  • Put milk and water mixture in a large bowl
  • Add enough flour to make a batter
  • Add yeast
  • Add more flour until dough is not sticky and easy to handle
  • Grease bowl and place dough in and turn dough until all sides are greased
  • Cover and let rise until double
  • Punch dough down and knead for a good 10 minutes
  • Cover and let rise until double again
  • Punch down and knead again
  • Cut dough into 5 eaual parts
  • Form loaves and place into pans
  • Cover pans and let rise until double
  • Bake at 350 degrees for approx 30 minutes or until golden brown
  • Put on rack and brush loaf with butter or margarine
  • Let cool completely before freezing or bagging
